Day 1 San Ignosio

A great start today!  Unfortunately, I missed lunch with the group and representatives from the University of the West Indies .  Fortunately, I have some great classmates that shared their experience with me and brought me information for the Medical Science programs.

Jerry brought the hour+ trip from Belize City to San Ignacio in the mountains close to the Mexican border.  The topography certainly changed along the way.  As we left the airport, things seemed more barren and dry.  As we got closer to the mountains things became more green and more people moving around.  You could tell the difference driving through the more rural of areas and coming into a more urban area.  There were Mayan ruins along the way in the background; however, I did not realize that is what they were until Dr. Catapano pointed some out once we got to the Plaza Hotel.

The hotel is really more like a guest house, I believe is what Dr. Catapano told us.  An older couple lives here and then rents out the bedrooms.  No AC, until you want to pay extra.  I am going to try out the open windows and fans tonight and see how it goes....

Our group had dinner at a local restaurant.  The special tonight was Cow Foot Soup... none of us was brave enough to try it.  However, the stewed chicken with beans and rice and plantain was really good!  The waitress says that is their "Sunday Dinner".

Relaxing now on the balcony with a couple of classmates.  We are off early tomorrow to visit Galan University!
